Employment Issues Mostly a Matter of Common Sense

The February 20, 2009 luncheon meeting of the Mid-Valley Claims Association featured a return visit by guest speaker Adam Corren, of the Law Offices of Corren & Corren. Following Mr. Corren's very well received presentation a year ago, the MVCA invited him back for a follow-up.

A noted expert in the field of Employment Law, Mr. Corren endeavored to involve the audience with questions and scenarios of various workplace considerations and concerns. He rattled off his "Top Five Ways to Avoid (Employment-related) Litigation, which included:
1) Don't have a lot of (or any) employees - a lot of employment laws don't apply to small companies with fewer than five, or fewer than 50 employees;
2) Don't illegally harass or discriminate anybody;
3) Give employee reason for employment action - not necessarily a law, but good practice;
4) Think before documenting - brief is best, if you must
5) a contract is a contract - verbal or written.

As before, Adam Corren's presentation was concise, thought-provoking, and entertaining.
