April MVCA brings DOI Adjuster Recertification

The folks at Dave Wong's Restaurant in Stockton were in for a bit of a surprise when 60 plus people showed up for the April 20, 2007 Mid-Valley Claims luncheon meeting. The annual recertification of the Department of Insurance "Fair Claims Settlement Practices" regulations tends to bring more adjusters out than normal, but this forced drastic action to accommodate the crowd.

The Board members of the MVCA have been working diligently to present quality claims related speakers this year, and their efforts appear to be paying off.

Returning guest speaker, Mark Berry of Mayall Hurley Knutsen Smith & Green did a good job of making "a very dry subject" interesting. Introducing the regs, he stated that their intent is to provie "good faith, efficient, cost effective handling of claims".

"Timelines are 'weekend inclusive'," he stated. "If a deadline falls on a weekend you have until the next business day," he clarified. "You must acknowledge a claims within 15 days. You must then accept or deny said claims within 40 days.

"Handle the claims as if it were for your own family," he suggested strongly. "You face a $5,000 penalty each time you screw up, and $10,000 penalty if found to be intentional," he stated.

Certificates were provided for all claims people in attendance, which was a high percentage of the crowd.

In other announcements on the day, MVCA Golf Tournament Committee member, Frances Hewitt, of Tucknott Electric Co., gave an update on the upcoming 42nd annual Mid-Valley Claims Golf Tournament. To be held back at Dry Creek Golf Course in Galt (right off Hwy 99), the tournament has been moved up in date from last year's event. This year it will be held June 29th. So, now is the time to get your reservations and sponsorships in. Contact Frances, or Keven Crabb, or complete the Golf Form and send it in ASAP.
